Scope and Content Notes
The Eric “Ted” Carlson Papers is comprised of 71 documents spanning from 1944-1946 ordered chronologically within three series: 1. Personal; 2. Military; 3. Academic and Professional. The collection consists largely of personal correspondence, the bulk being between Carlson and his parents. The letters primarily focus on Carlson’s time with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Manhattan Project at the end of World War II. Other miscellaneous documents from military service and academic studies are also included.
Most communication is to and from the Manhattan District at the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan, where Carlson was a Laboratory Engineer on the atomic bomb from 1944-1945. However, correspondence also covers graduation from Wesleyan University (Middletown, Connecticut); graduate school at Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa); army induction at Fort Snelling (Minnesota); military reactivation at Fort Sheriden (Illinois); basic training at Oak Ridge (Tennessee); assignment to Monsanto Chemical Company (Dayton, Ohio); and admission to Cornell University (New York).
Other letters contain correspondence from friends; military assignments and early discharge; and academic chemistry studies. Military documents include a commissary card for Patterson Field, Ohio; an interplant pass for the Manhattan District; and reassignment rosters. Education and professional documents include a copy of the June 1946 Bulletin of the Dayton Association of Scientists on atomic energy legislation and an Iowa State time card.
