"Holy Mother! Now he's going to kidnap a bishop!" -- Mrs. McCarthy, Father Brown, "A Christmas Special & The Return of Flambeau"
I love a good cozy mystery. They are quick reads with intrigue, mystery, and a little creepiness without making it hard to sleep at night. They make you think. This is probably why my husband and I have been binge watching BBC mystery series Father Brown on Netflix. The light-hearted murder mystery is based on GK Chesterton's series of books by the same name. The characters are marvelous and it is difficult to beat the setting of the quaint English village of Kembleford.
Father Brown is the priest of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in the fictional town. The series picks up during the aftermath of World War II, which makes for some fabulous costuming - particularly that of Lady Felicia and her niece, Bunty. These two ladies, along with the parish secretary Mrs. Bridgette McCarthy, act as sidekicks as the Father looks into the mysteries of Kembleford.
The only disturbing thing about the show is the fact that so many people die in the small Cotswold village area and no one seems to find this odd. Not to worry, though, Father Brown will sort it all out and you will still find yourself daydreaming about quaint village life.
