Food is a very personal thing. We attach memories to it. It comforts us. We look forward to certain dishes all year long. There are childhood favorites that we still indulge in as adults. It is a large part of who we are as a culture and as individuals.
The Gravy podcast by the Southern Food Alliance is an intelligent collection of narratives surrounding the southern food culture. It doesn't chase celebrity chefs. Instead it is an oral history of the real south and the people who cook there.
And I do mean the real south. It covers the people of all backgrounds and heritage who now call the American south home. You will find discussion of moonshine and barbecue next to talk of chilaquiles and modern pop-up dinners. Gravy recognizes that the south is evolving and changing and so, then, is the food.
It's not all just about cooking either. The podcast also brings attention to the men, women, and families who grow, catch, and raise the food.
