“I have read Lolita, as you requested. It is a good book, and therefore you should try to sell it to the inhabitants of Hardborough. They won't understand it, but that is all to the good. Understanding makes the mind lazy.” ― Penelope Fitzgerald, The Bookshop
This 1978 novel by Penelope Fitzgerald follows a kindhearted woman, who hopes to offer the small town of Hardborough a much needed resource by opening a bookstore. Her shop grows into a success, until she steps on the toes of the local art maven. When the small town closes ranks against her, Florence has little hope of maintaining her shop... especially with a ghost in the wings.
I truly enjoyed this book. It's a quick read that makes you pull for the underdog and ignites indignity at those who think their privilege out ranks the good of the greater community.
